सन 1957 में जब बिहार के नवादा को लोकसभा सीट बनाया गया, तब कांग्रेस की सत्यभामा देवी वहां से पहली महिला सांसद बनीं। सत्यभामा देवी ने 1962 में अपना लोकसभा क्षेत्र बदल लिया क्योंकि तब तक नवादा सुरक्षित क्षेत्र बन गया था। इस बार वो जहानाबाद लोकसभा सीट से चुनाव में उतरी और वहां से जीत हासिल कर दूसरी बार संसद में पहुंची। अपने दूसरे चुनाव उन्होंने टिकारी के राजपरिवार से आने वाले चंद्रशेखर सिंह को 35 हजार वोटों से हराया था।

सत्यभामा देवी बिहार से दो बार चुनाव जीतकर लोकसभा में पहुंची। वे उन नेताओं में शुमार हैं जिन्होंने हरिजनों, गरीबों और महिला कल्याण को अपने जीवन का लक्ष्य बना लिया था। उन्होंने भूदान आंदोलन के दौरान अपनी 500 बीघे जमीन गरीबों के लिए दान कर दी थी।

किसान परिवार में जन्म

सत्यभामा देवी का जन्म मार्च 1911 में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम हरि सिंह था। वे बिहार के बड़हिया गांव की रहने वाली थीं। उनका विवाह गया जिले के एक बड़े किसान और राजनीतिक कार्यकर्ता त्रिवेणी प्रसाद सिंह से हुआ।
तब बिहार के परंपरागत किसान परिवार की महिलाएं राजनीति में सक्रिय नहीं होती थीं। लेकिन,सत्यभामा देवी ने विवाह के बाद पर्दा प्रथा को नकारते हुए राजनीतिक गतिविधियों में हिस्सा लेना शुरू किया।

हरिजन उत्थान में सक्रिय

सत्यभामा देवी ने स्वतंत्रता के बाद आचार्य विनोबा भावे द्वारा चलाए गए भूदान आंदोलन में सक्रियता निभाई। उन्होंने अपनी 500 बीघा जमीन भूदान के अंतर्गत गरीबों को दान में दे दी थी। इसके साथ उन्होंने दूसरे लोगों को भी ऐसा करने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
